From together against the enemies to being the best of frenemies, UAE’s Mohammed bin Zayed and Saudi’s Mohammed bin Salman were going back to the recently-repaired rift. With the rise of the two leaders, their countries also began to grow closer. But, MbZ and MbS have lately reached the point of saturation.

In their individual journey to call the shots in Middle East, they started competing for geopolitical and economic power, and global oil markets. Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed was merely 29 years old, when MbZ held his hand.

In 2015, MbZ plunged into Saudi’s internal succession battle against his foe, Mohammed bin Nayef, and lobbied in the U.S. for Mohammed bin Salman, who he hardly knew. As MbS came into power in 2017, MbZ began to groom the young and naive Saudi prince.

Since then, MbS looked upon the then-Abu Dhabi Crown Prince for guidance. Years later, Saudi’s Prince Salman realized that he had been “stabbed” in the back. It took time for MbS to learn the self-centric nature of the Emirati leader.

The two sides began drifting apart when their interests in Yemen diverged. It was the UAE that advanced its personal interests over that of the coalition. The Emirates was backing the STC to keep hold of Yemen’s ports and oil and gas fields.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE also emerged as progressive economic competitors. Since coming to power, MbS had been working to open up his conservative Kingdom. In formulating plans to end the country’s reliance on oil, MbS frustrated his onetime mentor.

The frustration amplified as the Saudi Crown Prince started pushing companies. to move their regional headquarters from Dubai to Riyadh. Saudi Crown Prince’s plans included:
– Setting up tech centers
– Drawing tourists
– Building a tower taller than Burj Khalifa
– Developing logistical hubs to rival the Emirates’ position

Launching a second national airline to compete with Dubai’s Emirates
Purchasing Newcastle United F.C. against the UAE-owned Manchester City F.C. Mohammed bin Zayed started fearing of being eclipsed by Mohammed bin Salman. Speaking of the UAE, Saudi Crown Prince said, “I don’t trust them anymore”.

In an off-the-record briefing with journalists in December 2022, MbS warned, “They will see what I can do…It will be worse than what I did with Qatar.” Once the allies that were “cut from the same cloth”,

MbZ and MbS also stopped speaking with each other, or attending events together. The private disputes between them was expected to grow into a diplomatic war between their countries.
